Almost one month without updating this blog… I have some excuses though: a trip in France & Swiss (great live in Lausanne, thank you Niko!), then moving to Fuchu (still in Tokyo but no more inside the Yamanote line) and no Internet yet at home.
Between unpacking and commuting I nonetheless had the time to learn the death of Michael Jackson Yasuharu Hasebe, one of my favorite director of violent pink. It didn’t make the headlines though…
Otherwise everything is calm on the noise front with no live shows planned in a foreseeable future. I’m pretty busy anyway as my work “Sound of Life” will be presented at PdCon09 in São Paulo at the end of this month and I didn’t finished it yet. And the deadline for Arse Elektronika 2009 is July 31, that is quite soon !

The videos of the last two live performances of “The Ningen Dogs Orchestra” (conducted by 23N! & super utako) are now available on YouTube.

The first (thank you Alexis) was taken at the Make: Tokyo Meeting 03 and is more a demo than a proper live performance. The second (in two parts, thank you Kondo-san) one was taken at Fourth Floor and is closer to what the Ningen Dogs Orchestra ought to be.

Two live performances of the Ningen Dogs Orchestra (conducted by super utako & 23N!) are planned this month. The first one will be on Sunday 24 May during the Make: Tokyo Meeting 03 at the Tama Center. There is no entrance fee.
I’ll be there on 23 and 24 May with super utako for performances (we will perform as “23N! with super utako” on Saturday 23 May too), a circuit bending workshop and exhibitions of some projects (Sonata per Mario, Nunk on Droise, homemade instruments, Ningen Dogs Orchestra, …).
I’ll let you know the schedule as soon as I know it.

The second Ningen Dogs Orchestra performance will be at Fourth Floor on Friday 29 May:

Myselves

Another variation on my project “Sound of Life” called “Myselves”.
When a person comes in front of a camera, a picture is taken and processed so that only the face of the person is kept. The picture of the face is then used to replace all the tracked spermatozoa.
For now, the picture is taken manually by pressing a key on the keyboard of the computer but in the future the picture will be taken automatically by detecting the presence of a person (that can be done by software or hardware).

I’ve uploaded a short demo video on Flickr and YouTube.
I’ve uploaded a second demo video of Sperm Soccer too. The quality is much better and the program has been improved.

Wireless Alcohol Sensor (Nunk on Droise)

I’ve just completed a wireless alcohol sensor that is embedded in a beer can. It’s a MQ-3 alcohol sensor connected to an ATMEGA168 microcontroller (programmed with Arduino) itself connected to a Blue SMiRF Bluetooth module. Everything is powered by a 9V battery. Communication is serial and wireless through Bluetooth.

I will use it as a complement to the five alcohol sensors box I’m already using for my Nunk on Droise performance. The idea is to use it as a kind of wireless microphone to interact with the audience.

I’ve updated the page of my works too and added a page especially dedicated to the Sperm Soccer project.

Sperm Soccer

Based on my “Sound of Life” project, I just completed a first version of a small game that is played by my semen. The game is a kind of soccer game mixed with Pong. Everything is controlled by the computer (selection of the team members, tracking) but for the future versions I’m thinking to allow people selecting the team members (through Wiiremotes for examples) to make the game more interactive.

There’re still a lot of things that I have to do to make “Sperm Soccer” more interesting:
- adding music/sounds,
- more “intelligent” behavior for the team members,
- more “evolved” game (more soccer-like, less pong-like).

First, I want to thank all the artists who played, the people who helped and the ones who came for making last Saturday’s event (Geräusch in der Lederhose) at Highti a success.
The “Droise & The Ningen Dogs Orchestra” act (fortunately, the last act) was interrupted by an angry and probably drunk neighbor (second time that it happens in few months) but not before the Ningen Dogs Orchestra could dance and sing to the sound-activated lights and the magic wand of Utako. Droise’s act itself was a bit short but we had a lot of fun so the interruption was quickly forgotten.
Kakawaka is back to Berlin but droise shall come back, stronger than ever ! And The Ningen Dogs Orchestra will be back soon too.

I’ve uploaded the video of our performance at Fourth Floor (2009.03.27) on YouTube. It’s in three parts: 01 / 02 / 03.
I was playing solo as “Nunk on Droise” last Sunday at Gari Gari but forgot to turn on the camera… So no video and no pictures either. May be some pictures will appear on the web soon.

The next event will be at Highti next Saturday (04/04) and we’re working on the Droise & The Ningen Dogs Orchestra (first live ever for them !) performance. I’m preparing some German food too (sauerkraut !) to be served during the event so I don’t see what kind of excuse you could have for not coming (moreover, lederhosenfilme will be shown)!

I’ve uploaded the video (two parts) of the droise live performance at golden egg (a very nice place in the middle of Kabukicho, Shinjuku) on 2009/03/24 on YouTube (videos by Utako).
This was the first droise show in more than 18 months, I guess our hard training in a Bavarian Shaolin temple was worth it !
The next droise show will be at Highti on 4/4 and it will be the last one before a while. Don’t miss it !

Animata renderer for Processing

I recently discovered the very nice open source software Animata to do animations. I was planning to use it with my project “Nunk on Droise” to create interactive animations but found some limitations even if the animations could be controlled through OSC.

Then I found a Processing library for rendering Animata scenes within Processing developed by Michael Forrest. It was almost exactly what I needed so I recompiled it to suit my needs and to simplify it. The Processing library and the sources are available on Github, project animatap5. Some explanations are given in the readme file and I’ll try to upload some examples soon.

The first exhibition of the “Ningen Dogs Orchestra” was held at Highti on 28 December 2008.

The Ningen Dogs are by Utako Shibatsuji and the electronics by myself.
A video of the first prototype can be seen here. Some pictures of the exhibition are here.
We are planning to build more “ningen dogs” that react to light (the light being itself controlled by sound), so more to come soon !

23N! - Nunk on Droise (first live)

I did my first “Nunk on Droise” live performance last Sunday at Soup for the Sound Follies 3 event ( a great event by the way, very very harsh noise). I made use of the device I built recently that features three alcohol sensors, the music being generated by a pure data patch.

I puked much earlier than planned (after only 3 min. instead of 10 min.) so it was quickly a big mess, but it was finally not a big problem except for the sticky cables and the smell… I’ve uploaded some pictures on Flickr.
Someone stole my bottle of Jinro (may be because that’s the only one I didn’t use after puking), I just hope he/she enjoyed the show. Kampai !
I’d like to perform again (not too often though), so if you want to see a messy vomit harsh noise performance, please contact me !

Nunk on Droise

This is the name of my new device. It is constituted of three alcohol sensors connected to an Arduino board. The Arduino is itself connected to a computer running a pure data patch (I’ve been learning pure data just for this).

Noise is produced depending on the amount of alcohol in my breath as well as which sensor I’m breathing into. I’m planning to use the device for the first time ever this Sunday (21 December) for a solo performance at Soup (Sound Follies 3).

Sakesizer SX-150

I’ve made a modification to the Gakken Analog Synthesizer SX-150. The interface for making sound with the original SX-150 is with a small stylus. I’ve added another interface (there is a selector for switching between the two interfaces) so that it is possible to control the SX-150 through alcohol. There is a sensor that is attached to the SX-150 that is sensitive to alcohol. You can either put the sensor near a source of alcohol or if you just drank alcohol, you can just breath on it. The sound is altered depending on the alcohol level.
